Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I know you give away jackets, boots, etc. What do you currently need? Will you take my son’s gently used snow pants and boots?
A: Yes – we accept program specific items all year. Check our Donate page for a list of items we need.
Q: I need to send a fax. Is that service available? What does it cost?
A: You can send a fax from our office at no charge.
Q: Do you have a phone I can use?
A: We have a phone on-site for people to use for business calls, including housing, employment, etc. This phone is not for personal calls.
Q: I need to find a job. What resources are available for me?
A: Our Computer Technology Center has volunteers who can help you start writing or re-writing your resume and start your job search, and we can give you other resources to help you in your search.
Q: Can you help me fill out the forms to apply for financial assistance, health insurance, food stamps?
A: It’s always best to schedule an appointment for this with our Starfish Coordinator.
Q: I have a disconnection notice from CenterPoint Energy. What do I do?
A: Depending on the time of the year, we can let you know who to contact to possibly receive some financial assistance for this issue.
Q: There’s very little food in the house, and my appointment with the food shelf isn’t for two days. What can I do in the meantime?
A: The local foodshelf (ICA) gives us emergency food bags to distribute on their behalf. You can come into our office and get one.
Q: I can’t pay my rent this month. Where can I go for help?
A: Although we don’t offer financial assistance, we can explain where to go and how to access financial resources.
Q: How can I see a doctor if I have no insurance? Or, I need to see a dentist but can’t afford to. Where can I go?
A: There are sliding fee clinics in the metro area. We can give you names, addresses, and phone numbers for the one nearest you.
